HarmonyOS Next, Huawei’s upcoming next-generation operating system for its devices, is on the verge of release, with the native applications for the impending update already primed for deployment. In a departure from the usual reliance on Google’s Android Open Source Project (AOSP) code, HarmonyOS Next is constructed around Huawei’s proprietary kernel and system. This design choice entails a significant shift, as the operating system will no longer support Android apps.
The unveiling of HarmonyOS Next took place earlier this year during its developmental phase, following the milestone of surpassing 60 million HarmonyOS 4 installations. Reports indicated that HarmonyOS Next was positioned as a “pure” iteration of Huawei’s mobile operating system, devoid of Google’s Android libraries.
Since its introduction in August 2019, HarmonyOS has accommodated Android apps due to the relatively underdeveloped app ecosystem at that time. However, a recent Pandaily report suggests a departure from this approach, indicating that Huawei is poised to discontinue support for Android apps.
Consequently, users will no longer have the capability to install Android apps from official sources, and the common practice of sideloading apps in the widely used Android Package (APK) format will no longer be functional. Instead, HarmonyOS Next will adopt the company’s proprietary HAP format.
Upon the arrival of the HarmonyOS Next update on eligible smartphones, the ability to run Android apps will cease. Notably, Chinese enterprises such as Meituan, NetEase, JD.com, and other major tech firms have begun recruiting Harmony OS app developers through platforms like Liepin.com and Maimai. These developers are tasked with creating apps tailored for Huawei smartphones. A developer preview of HarmonyOS Next is anticipated to debut in the first quarter of 2024.
Although Huawei has not disclosed a specific launch timeline for HarmonyOS Next, it is evident that the operating system will no longer support Android apps. Chinese companies are already adapting to this change by actively engaging in the development of apps compatible with Huawei’s new app packaging format. Further details about the operating system update are expected to emerge with the release of the developer preview next year.
