MTN 5G Network Expands to Over 700 Sites Activated in 13 Cities
The Fifth Generation (5G) network adoption is rapidly expanding, with MTN revealing that it has activated an impressive 700+ sites across 13 cities since its launch in August 2021.
These connected cities, as stated by MTN, include busy cities such as Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano, Owerri, Ibadan, Maiduguri, Abeokuta, Ife, Warri, Enugu, Ife, and Ifo. During a recent conversation with journalists, MTN Nigeria’s Chief Technical Officer, Mohammed Rufai, shared the progress made so far and highlighted the various benefits Nigerians are currently enjoying through 5G.
Rufai confidently asserted that Nigeria was fully prepared for this technological advancement, emphasizing the country’s existing capacity in terms of spectrum availability, fibre infrastructure, market potential, and technical expertise. He further revealed that 5G would not only complement the nation’s ambitious broadband penetration target of 70% by 2025 but also ensure the expansion of telecom services to even the most remote areas.
With Nigeria’s current broadband penetration standing at 48%, offering internet access to a staggering 92 million people, Rufai proudly stated that MTN’s coverage has extended to approximately 92% of the country’s population.
While some countries, like South Africa, are considering shutting down their 2G and 3G networks, Rufai clarified that such measures are not presently planned for Nigeria. He emphasized the importance of catering to subscribers across all technology categories and meeting their diverse network needs.
“Just because we are moving towards 5G doesn’t mean we neglect the requirements of subscribers on other technologies. We must also consider those who rely on lower technologies. In fact, even the 3G network can be utilized for future services,” Rufai explained.
“For MTN Nigeria, getting rid of these technologies is not part of our current plan. We will consider what our subscribers need. We will not leave anyone behind, even as we encourage people to transition to higher technologies. Naturally, we understand that there will come a time when the number of people on these networks diminishes, allowing us to make appropriate decisions,” he reassured.
To drive widespread 5G adoption, Rufai acknowledged that the availability of devices, particularly mobile phones, remains limited, with steep prices posing a significant challenge. However, he highlighted that customers can still experience the benefits of 5G through fixed wireless infrastructure, as there are 5G routers available for connecting to WiFi.
Furthermore, he revealed that MTN is collaborating with various Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to develop 5G devices, addressing the scarcity in the market.
Acknowledging the obstacles faced during the expansion of fibre infrastructure due to Right of Way (RoW) issues in different states, the MTN CTO expressed appreciation for the efforts of the Federal Government. He noted that more states are now recognizing the economic advantages of facilitating fibre deployment, a critical element for nationwide 5G expansion.
“I assure you that the challenges surrounding RoW are being addressed. The deployment of fibre is crucial to ensure that 5G reaches every corner of the country,” Rufai concluded optimistically.
