In a recent press release, Sony made a significant announcement regarding the leadership of its gaming division. Jim Ryan, the current head of PlayStation and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, is preparing to step down. Sony revealed that Ryan will officially retire in March 2024. Following his departure, Hiroki Totoki, the President and Chief Operating Officer of Sony Group Corporation, will assume the role of interim CEO, starting from April 1st, 2024.
In a statement reflecting on his remarkable tenure, Ryan expressed, “After 30 years, I have made the decision to retire from SIE in March 2024. I’ve relished the opportunity to have a job I love in a very special company, working with great people and incredible partners.” He also acknowledged the challenges of balancing a life in Europe with work responsibilities in North America. Despite bidding farewell to his role, Ryan maintained his enduring connection with PlayStation, stating, “PlayStation will always be part of my life, and I feel more optimistic than ever about the future of SIE.”
Jim Ryan’s association with Sony spans an impressive 28 years, commencing in 1994 at the company’s European branch. Over the years, he has held various leadership positions, including the head of global sales and marketing. In 2019, Ryan assumed the role of President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, succeeding John Kodera.

During his tenure, Jim Ryan notably spearheaded the launch of the PlayStation 5. Despite challenges posed by supply chain constraints during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, the console managed to recover its shipments. Sony proudly announced the sale of 40 million PS5 units in July.
Ryan’s role extended beyond gaming hardware, as he played a prominent role in the ongoing dispute between Microsoft and the FTC regarding Microsoft’s proposed acquisition of gaming giant Activision Blizzard. Earlier this year, Ryan’s comments contradicted Sony’s public stance, stating that the acquisition wasn’t primarily about console exclusivity.
In preparation for the transition, Hiroki Totoki will assume the position of Chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment in October 2023, preceding Jim Ryan’s departure. Upon becoming interim CEO, Totoki will work closely with Kenichiro Yoshida, Chairman and CEO of Sony Group Corporation, and the SIE management team to chart the course for the future of PlayStation, including the selection of the next SIE CEO.
