Scanga Meat Company has issued a recall for 563 pounds of ground beef over potential contamination with E. coli. The products in question were produced on December 11 and have the establishment number “EST. 6460” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
The recalled ground beef items include 6-pound plastic tubes of “It’s a treat to eat Scanga Meat OUR REGULAR GROUND BEEF” and “It’s a treat to eat Scanga Meat OUR X-L GROUND BEEF,” 1-pound plastic chubs of “SCANGA MEAT HAMBURGER,” and 1-pound plastic trays of “It’s a treat to eat Scanga Meat GROUND ROUND.” The products may have the lot code 3345 represented on their labels. If you have any of these recalled products, do not consume them. You may dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase.
The recalled ground beef was sold at retail locations in Colorado and was shipped to restaurants within the state. While there have been no confirmed illnesses related to the consumption of the recalled ground beef, it’s better to be safe than sorry. If you have the recalled product, it’s important to discard it immediately.
Symptoms of E. Coli Infections
E. coli is a type of bacteria found in contaminated food and water. The symptoms of E. coli infections can include diarrhoea, vomiting, and stomach cramps. In rare cases, it can lead to hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure. Symptoms of HUS can include easy bruising, paleness in the skin, and low urine output. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms, especially if you have consumed the recalled ground beef.
It’s important to properly cook raw meat to avoid E. coli infections. The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) recommends cooking ground beef to an internal temperature of 160 degrees F (71 degrees C) to kill harmful bacteria.
